Preparation
Taking time to prepare properly will make the installation smoother and extend the life of your flooring.
Tools and materials you'll need
Check our list of common flooring tools to build out your DIY toolbox.
Measuring and ordering
Measure the length and width of your room to calculate total square footage. Order 5–10% extra to account for cuts and mistakes — and to avoid dye lot mismatches if you need more later.
Example: If you need 130 sq ft, order at least 132–143 sq ft to give yourself a comfortable buffer.
Acclimation
Most flooring needs 48 hours to adjust to room temperature and humidity. Shaw Floorté is impervious to moisture, so it can be installed the same day it's delivered.
Preparing the subfloor
Shaw Floorté can be installed over vinyl, ceramic tile, or hardwood (as long as the hardwood isn't glued directly over concrete). Follow these steps to get the subfloor ready.
Clear the area
Remove all furniture and appliances from the room to give yourself a clear, safe workspace.
Inspect and repair
Look for damage, protruding nails, or uneven areas. Fix cracks, address squeaks, and ensure the surface is clean and dry before moving on.
Level the surface
Use a leveling compound or self-leveling underlayment to smooth out dips or high spots. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application and drying time.
Remove baseboards and moldings
Take off baseboards with a pry bar. This lets you run the flooring cleanly underneath them for a seamless, finished look.
Test for moisture
Use a moisture meter, or tape a trash bag to the floor for 48 hours — if moisture collects underneath, address it before installing. Use a moisture barrier if levels are too high.
Clean thoroughly
Sweep and clean the subfloor to remove all dust, dirt, and debris so the adhesive or underlayment can bond properly.
Installing the flooring
Plan your layout
Install planks parallel to the longest wall. Measure the room width, divide by plank width, and split the remainder equally between the first and last rows. No row should be less than 2 inches wide.
Lay underlayment (if applicable)
Roll out the underlayment to cover the full floor area, following the manufacturer's instructions.
Install the first row
Place the first plank in a corner with the tongue side facing the wall. Use spacers to maintain the expansion gap and ensure it's straight and level.
Connect the planks
Angle each new plank against the previous one, matching tongue and groove. Use a tapping block and rubber mallet to lock them firmly into place.
Continue row by row
Start each new row with a cut piece to stagger the joints. Pull from multiple boxes as you go to achieve a natural color variation across the floor.
Trim around obstacles
For doorways, vents, or other obstructions, use a template or careful measurements to make precise cuts with your utility knife.
Finish the last row
Trim the final row to fit, then remove all spacers. Check periodically that planks are level and joints are tightly connected throughout.
Finishing touches and maintenance
After installation
Clean up any dust, adhesive residue, or debris. Install transition moldings where the vinyl meets other flooring types, and seal expansion gaps with a flexible sealant to prevent dirt buildup while allowing natural movement.
Ongoing maintenance
- Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove loose dirt and debris.
- Damp mop with a pH-neutral cleaner formulated for vinyl flooring.
- Wipe up spills immediately to prevent staining.
- Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners, or steam mops.
- Place felt or rubber pads under furniture legs to prevent scratches.
- Use doormats at entryways and rugs in high-traffic areas to minimize wear.
- Use window coverings or UV-blocking film to limit sun exposure and prevent fading.
- When moving heavy furniture, use sliders rather than dragging across the floor.
