Every year, as the seasons change, homeowners across the country notice their hardwood floors doing things that feel alarming: gaps appearing overnight, boards cupping at the edges, or planks that seem to have warped out of nowhere.

The good news: in the vast majority of cases, this is completely normal. Wood is a natural, living material, and it responds to humidity the same way it did as a tree - by absorbing and releasing moisture from the air. Understanding why this happens, what's normal, and what actually warrants concern can turn that panicked feeling into peace of mind.


Why Humidity Affects Hardwood Floors

Wood is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs and releases moisture depending on the humidity of its surrounding environment. When the air is humid, wood fibers absorb water vapor and swell. When the air is dry, wood releases moisture and shrinks. Because hardwood flooring is installed edge-to-edge in long, connected runs, even small amounts of swelling or shrinking per board add up across an entire room.

Cupping

Crowning

The opposite of cupping: the center of the board is higher than the edges. This is often a sign that a floor cupped at some point, and was then sanded flat while still wet, or that the moisture source has since been resolved but the wood hasn't fully re-equalized.

Warping (or buckling)

Boards visibly lift off the subfloor, sometimes by an inch or more. This is the most serious of the group and usually signals a significant, sustained moisture problem - flooding, a plumbing leak, or a chronically damp crawlspace or basement.

Staying inside this range minimizes the amount of expansion and contraction your floors experience, which means fewer gaps, less cupping risk, and a longer lifespan for your finish.

A simple hygrometer (often under $15) placed in your main living area is the easiest way to actually know what's happening in your home, rather than guessing.


How to Protect Your Floors Through Every Season

  • In winter: Run a humidifier to keep indoor humidity from dropping too low, especially in homes with forced-air heating, which dries out air significantly. Whole-home humidifiers attached to the HVAC system offer the most consistent results.
  • In summer: Use air conditioning and, if needed, a dehumidifier to keep humidity from climbing above 50%, particularly in basements or homes without central air.
  • Year-round: Avoid placing floors directly over unvented crawlspaces or damp basements without a proper vapor barrier.
